Summary
This module provides an overview of managerial work in modern organisation. The module covers both the impact of organisational structures on individual and team behaviour and the way the organisation can be shaped through intentional strategies in the domains of marketing, human resources, corporate social responsibility and innovation. In addition, this module has been designed to introduce students to the case method learning approach, i.e. how to review, analyse and report different case studies on a business topic.
Target Students
Preliminary year students at UNNC who will be enrolled in NUBS China and in the School of English (degree in English with International Business)
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Overall, students are expected to do 200 hours of study for this module. This will include lectures and tutorial preparation, homework tasks, reading & other self-directed study, and test and examination revision.
Assessment
- 30% Presentation: Group oral presentation involving a case study analysis
- 70% Exam 1 (2-hour): 120-minute written exam comprising MCQs and a one-page case study

Educational Aims
To introduce topics in management and organisational behaviour, strategy and decision-making, and the case-study method of learning.Learning Outcomes
• Knowledge and understanding: This module develops a knowledge and understanding of the management and development of people within organisations, the management of resources and operations, the development of appropriate business policies and strategies to meet stakeholder needs within a changing environment, and a range of contemporary and pervasive business and management issues including business innovation, e-commerce, creativity and enterprise, knowledge management, sustainability, globalization, business ethics, values and norms, entrepreneurship.
• Intellectual skills: This module develops skills in the use of a range of techniques to initiate and undertake critical analysis via the application of management theory in different business contexts. This will involve understanding effective qualitative problem solving and decision-making skills, and effective quantitative problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Professional/Practical skills: This module develops an appreciation of business, and in particular the analysis of management and organisational behaviour using different approaches. Students will be provided with an understanding of qualitative and quantitative skills (e.g. data analysis, interpretation and extrapolation), and the ability to apply business models to business problems and phenomena and persuasively present their findings and recommendations.
• Transferable/key skills: This module develops various skills that will enable students to present and communicate ideas and arguments effectively in both written and oral contexts. This will involve understanding effective self-management, in terms of organising, planning and managing others, critical thinking, self-motivation and individual initiative, and entrepreneurial behaviour and leadership.
