Summary
This module will aim to extend the linguistic and study skills of the students to a level that is adequate for full participation in (a) the foundation year course and (b) undergraduate engineering and science studies.
Target Students
Only available for International students registered on the Engineering and Physical Sciences Foundation course or the Science Foundation course and Erasmus students.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
2 hours per week of lectures, group tuition and tutorial support.
Assessment
- 40% Oral: In-class Oral Presentation
- 60% Assignment: Written Assignment - 1500 words

Educational Aims
The module aims to extend the linguistic and study skills of the student to a level that is adequate for full participation in (a) the foundation year course and (b) undergraduate engineering and science studies, and that is equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 (dependent on requirements of receiving School).Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding of:
- the language of definition, classification and exemplification;
- the language of academic engineering and science texts;
- examination formats, questions and appropriate answers.
Intellectual skills:
- distinguish text types;
- recognise register (style);
- select appropriate language for given communicative functions;
- recognise and remedy areas of linguistic weakness.
Professional practical skills:
- research, plan and write a research report;
- research, plan and deliver a short presentation.
Transferable (key) skills:
- oral and written communication skills;
- independent working;
- time management;
- use of published language resources.
