Summary
The objective of the module is to help students develop a strong conceptual understanding of technological innovation. The module will introduce concepts, frameworks, and theories for the dynamics of technological innovation. The module covers concepts and theories related to invention and innovation, types of innovation, evolution of technology and S-Curve, dominant design and technology cycles, disruptive innovation reverse innovation & frugal innovation, standards and network externalities, and types of intellectual property. It aims to equip students with knowledge about formulating innovation strategy, choosing innovation project, collaboration strategies, IP strategies, managing organizational learning and creativity, new product development, strategy deployment, and innovation-related entrepreneurship.

- One 2-hour seminar each week for 2 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Group presentation: Group presentation (15 mins)
- 70% Exam 1 (1-hour-30-minute): Exam (90 mins)

Educational Aims

This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
- The development of appropriate business policies and strategies to meet stakeholder needs within a changing environment.
- The importance of sustainability issues, including an understanding of the challenges and opportunities arising from the activities of people and organisations on the economic, social and environmental conditions of the future.
This module develops:
- The cognitive skills of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis, including the ability to identify assumptions, evaluate statements in terms of evidence, to detect false logic or reasoning, to identify implicit values, and to define terms adequately and to generalise appropriately.
- The ability to create, evaluate and access a range of options, together with the capacity to apply ideas and knowledge to a range of business and other situations.
- Qualitative skills including the ability to work with case studies.
- The ability to apply business models to business problems and phenomena.
