Summary
The module will introduce basic corporate finance concepts, including the time value of money, financial markets, shares and bonds, financial risk and return, raising money, and the elements of investment.
Target Students
Only students registered on the MSc Civil Engineering with Management degree and MSc Exchange students.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 4 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 100% EXAM (2-hour): Exam. Two out of five questions from Section A (30%) and two out of four questions in Section B (70%) Summative.

Educational Aims
To introduce non-Business students to basic financial concepts.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
• Explain the concepts of time value of money and their roles in the discounted cash flow valuation.
• Describe characteristics of key financial instruments.
• Describe the relationship between risk and return
• Explain the cost of capital, leverage, and the capital structure
Intellectual Skills
• Critically appraise similarities and differences among key financial instruments, including but not limited to the risk and return characteristics.
• Evaluate how key financial instruments and their risk and return profile are relevant in project investment decisions
Professional Practical Skills
• Apply a range of techniques to appraise investment projects.
• Employ a range of approaches to re-evaluate the viability of investment projects in the changing economic and financial environments.
Transferable (key) Skills: This module develops:
• Manage and interpret statistical, financial, and economic data.
• Manage independent study and demonstrate effective planning and time-management skills.
