Summary
The module takes a dual approach covering both the business processes and the quantitative models and techniques necessary for supply chain planning and management. It is divided into three major parts.
1. Supply chain concepts and definitions. Fundamental planning and control concepts for supply chain and operations planning: classification of operational and supply systems. Inventory - forms, functions, decisions, models. Capacity – definitions and planning.
2. Forecasting for supply chain and production management. Planning, Scheduling and Control approaches: aggregate planning; hierarchical planning and control; MRP-based planning and control; JIT principles, kanban systems; Theory of constraints (TOC). Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
3. Supply chain collaboration: planning and control across the supply chain; the bullwhip effect; supply chain collaboration approaches – continuous replenishment, Vendor-Managed Inventory (VMI), Collaborative Planning Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR)
Target Students
Business School MSc students subject to compliance with module choice requirements, as listed in the degree programme specification. In addition, other MA/MSc students subject to the discretion of the Director of MSc Programmes
Classes
- One 1-hour tutorial each week for 3 weeks
- One 2-hour tutorial each week for 4 weeks
- One 3-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Total Contact Hours = 44 hours (lectures 3 hours x 11 weeks + 11 hours tutorials (4x2 hours and 3x1hour)).
Assessment
- 30% Group Project: Group project/assignment (3,500-word report)
- 70% EXAM 1 (2-hour): 2 Hour Examination

The module aims to provide a thorough introduction to supply chain management and supply chain planning processes relevant to contemporary operations. The module focuses on concepts, processes, models and techniques, and emphasises the role of information integration and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.Learning Outcomes
