Summary
This module provides a glimpse of the major aspects believed to be essential for a foreign national working for a Chinese firm or operating a subsidiary in China. These topics include (1) Government and business relations; (2) Marketing & Innovation Imperatives for IB in China (students will be working in groups to investigate foreign companies in China and find out how they adapt or adjust their businesses); (3) the essence of Chinese philosophies that influence business practices in China. Students will visit two firm – one local firm applying Confucianism in Management (the case of Fotile); and one foreign business operating in China to see for themselves how businesses are run in China.
Target Students
Business School MSc students subject to compliance with module choice requirements, as listed in the degree programme specification. In addition, other MA/MSc students subject to the discretion of the Director of MSc Programmes.
Classes
- One 3-hour lecture each week for 8 weeks
24 contact hours lectures , 36 hours of coursework preparation; 40 hours of self-study, including two half-day firm visits.
Assessment
- 32% Coursework 1: 2,000 word individual coursework
- 20% ACP: Active class participation (20%)
- 48% Exam 1 (1-hour): 1 hour exam

The ability to recognise and address ethical dilemmas, corporate social responsibility and sustainability issues, applying ethical and organisational values to situations and choices

Effective communication: networking, listening, oral and written communication of complex ideas and arguments, using a range of media, including the preparation of business reports
