Summary
This module provides an introductory overview of information systems in organisations, covering hardware, software, telecommunications, various information system types, and systems development. It delves into relational database design and explores SQL both as a data definition language and a data manipulation language. Additionally, the module introduces data manipulation using a language such as R.
Target Students
Only available for student studying MSc Information Systems and Operations Management OR MSc Business Analytics OR Master of Research Geospatial Data Science AND MSc Exchange students.
Classes
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
- One 4-hour laboratory each week for 8 weeks
This module is taught through a combination of lectures and laboratory sessions.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework: 5,000 words.

Educational Aims
This module aims to provide a broad-based introduction to the field of Information Systems, and to data management in particular, acquainting students with key technological trends in the field, and providing solid skills in SQL.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
- Communications and the comprehension and use of relevant communications for application in business and management, including the use of digital tools.
Intellectual Skills: This module develops:
- Being able to think critically and be creative: manage the creative processes in self and others; organise thoughts, analyse, synthesise and critically appraise. This includes the capability to identify assumptions, evaluate statements in terms of evidence, detect false logic or reasoning, identify implicit values, define terms adequately and generalise appropriately.
- Being able to solve complex problems and make decisions: establish criteria, using appropriate decision-making techniques including identifying, formulating and solving business problems; and the ability to create, identify and evaluate options; the ability to implement and review decisions.
- Using information and knowledge effectively in order to abstract meaning from information and to share knowledge, including the use of quantitative skills
Professional Practical Skills: This module develops:
- The ability to conduct research and enquiry into business and management issues either individually or as part of a team through research design, the collection and analysis of qualitative data, synthesis and reporting.
