Summary

We hope that the module will enable you to make sense of some of the different perspectives that exist and understand their strengths and limitations when applied in the modern business environment.  We will try to address various questions in this environment:
• Can all risks be identified?
• Can all risks be managed?
• Should all risks be managed?
• If not, how do we decide which should be ignored and which managed?
• How can risk, in particular financial risk, be measured?
• What techniques of risk management are available and what are their strengths and weaknesses?
• How can the risk management process be structured and planned?

Target Students

Available for Risk Management students, MSc Civil Engineering and Management students and MSc Exchange students.

Classes

Formal lessons (contact hours): 44 hours; reading and self-directed study: 88 hours; coursework preparation: 34 hours; exam preparation: 34 hours

Educational Aims

The purpose of this module is to provide you with a brief introduction to the current debate that surrounds the role and practice of risk management.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:
• Markets - the development and operation of markets for resources, goods and services
• Customers and stakeholders - customer expectations, service and orientation
• People – strategic  and operational HRM, meeting future organisational requirements, people development, HR systems
• The management of resources
• The management of operations
• The management of procurement
• The management of logistics
• The management of quality systems
• Leadership and management of people within organisations – leadership, organisational behaviour and motivation
• Strategic management - the development and implementation of appropriate strategies within a changing environment
• Strategic risk management and issues of compliance
 

Intellectual Skills:
• Being able to think critically and be creative: manage the creative processes in self and others; organise thoughts, analyse, synthesise and critically appraise. This includes the capability to identify assumptions, evaluate statements in terms of evidence, detect false logic or reasoning, identify implicit values, define terms adequately and generalise appropriately

Professional Practice Skills:
• The ability to recognise the need for and initiate change and to be able to manage change

Transferable (Key) Skills:
• Effective communication: networking, listening, oral and written communication of complex ideas and arguments, using a range of media, including the preparation of business reports
• Soft skills: understanding the needs of others and empathy towards them; sensitivity to diversity in people and in different situations
