Summary
This module explores key contemporary issues in organisational behaviour and the management of people in diverse and dynamic contexts. The topics covered will include employee motivation, leadership and working in teams, power & politics, conflict, change, culture, inclusion and contemporary challenges for an emerging industrial age.
Target Students
Only students registered on the MBA programme.
Classes
33 lecture hours, i.e. 3 hours per session (inclusive of small-group activities) for 11 sessions.
Assessment
- 20% Group Presentation: 20 mins with 5 mins Q & A
- 80% Individual Assignment: Individual assignment (3000 words)
Educational Aims
Managing people is a course that draws principally on the field of Organizational Behaviour (OB). OB is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structures have on behaviour within organizations for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization's capability and effectiveness.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
• Leadership and management of people within organisations - leadership, organisational behaviour and motivation
• Know and understand ethics, implicit values and values based leadership
• Know and understand the external environment from an international perspective, social, technological and policy implications for organisations
• Know and understand organisational/team dynamics
• Know and understand approaches to strategic workforce planning including talent management, learning organisations, workforce design, succession planning, diversity and inclusion
• Know and understand the use of diplomacy and politics with diverse groups & stakeholders both internal and external to effectively manage conflict
Intellectual skills
This module develops:
• Being able to think critically and be creative: manage the creative processes in self and others; organise thoughts, analyse, synthesise and critically appraise. This includes the capability to identify assumptions, evaluate statements in terms of evidence, detect false logic or reasoning, identify implicit values, define terms adequately and generalise appropriately
Professional practical skills
This module develops:
• The ability to conduct research and enquiry into business and management issues either individually or as part of a team through research design, the collection and analysis of qualitative data, synthesis and reporting
• Leadership and performance management: selecting appropriate leadership style for different situations; setting objectives, motivating, monitoring performance, coaching and mentoring
Transferable (key) skills
This module develops:
• Effective communication: networking, listening, oral and written communication of complex ideas and arguments, using a range of media, including the preparation of business reports
