Summary

This course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the management of employee performance, professional growth and career development in organizations. It covers theories, strategies, practices, and ongoing issues related to human resource practices and systems dealing with performance management. Additionally, this course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of compensation management. It covers a range of topics, including job analysis, job evaluation, external market analysis, pay structures, salary administration, motivation theories, and legal principles. The course also explores the concept of total compensation, including the integrated roles of base pay, employee benefits, and incentive programs within an organization. The aim of this course is to inspire students to appreciate the importance of effective performance management and compensation systems in organizations. Students will be familiarized with the design and implementation of effective performance management and compensation systems in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.


Pre-Requisites: BUSI2179 Human Resource Management with International Perspectives

Educational Aims

This course aims to bring consistency in applying performance and compensation management techniques within organizations. The course will help students recognize the roles and contributions of performance and compensation managers in managing performance and compensation effectively at work. It does this by providing an appreciation of the main elements and applications of performance management and compensation in an organisational context.

Learning Outcomes

Discuss principles and theories of performance management and compensation and apply them to evaluate performance management and compensation practices.
Discuss the roles of performance management and compensation as core human resource functions.
Explain and critically evaluate different factors that influence the implementation of performance management and compensation strategies.
Design a performance appraisal form and a compensation strategy for a specific job and situation.
Distinguish between effective and ineffective performance management and compensation systems.
