This module contains:
This course introduces participants to the principles of modern fixed interest investment management and how to value and analyse the risks associated with fixed interest investments.
The topics discussed include: Types, features, and uses of fixed income securities; Active and structured portfolio management strategies; Basics of fixed income analytics, from bond pricing to price volatility measures; Risks and risk control strategies; Asset-backed securities; Convertible securities and their investment application.
Lectures are accompanied by workshops and problem sets.
Re-assessment format is decided by the school.
Target Students

Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 3 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: 1,500 words group coursework
- 70% Exam 1 (1-hour-30-minute): 1.5 Hour examination, Section A 10 multiple choice questions carrying 30 marks in total (3 marks each), Section B Answer TWO questions out of three (35 marks each)

Educational Aims
Students are expected to know various types of fixed income securities and how to price them; how to measure and manage interest rate risk; understanding passive and active bond portfolio strategies; how to measure and manage other risks associated with fixed income securities; and understand bond portfolio strategies.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
- The sources, uses and management of finance.
- The use of risk management techniques and business continuity planning to help maximise achievement of strategic objectives.
Intellectual skills: This module develops:
- The ability to analyse facts and circumstances to determine the cause of a problem and identifying and selecting appropriate solutions.
- The ability to analyse and evaluate a range of business data, sources of information and appropriate methodologies, which includes the need for strong digital literacy, and to use that research for evidence-based decision-making.
- Conceptual and critical thinking, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
Professional practical skills: This module develops:
- Numeracy and quantitative skills to manipulate data, evaluate, estimate and model business problems, functions and phenomena.
Transferable (key) skills: This module develops:
- Communication and listening including the ability to produce clear, structured business communications in a variety of media.
