Summary
This module is designed to 1) provide students with a critical understanding of the development trends of work, career, and organisations as well as challenges observed in the changing workplace and organisations; 2) help students to develop mindset and expertise in the area of personal and professional development.
The module will contain three parts:
The development trends of work and organisational career.
Key topics include changing forms of work with a particular focus on the new types of work such as gig workers and virtual/remote work; fundamentals of organisational career and career development in time of changes and uncertainty, etc
The development trends of workplace and organisations.
- Key topics include digitalised workplace, human-centered organisational development, managing diversity and changes, etc
- Working in the changing organisations.
- The focus of this part will be on methods, techniques, and strategies to optimize human capital by combining personal and organizational factors for career development assessment, information, organizational culture, motivational styles, work values and other processes for influencing individual and organizational change. This will enable students to gain practical knowledge and skill set, with which students are able to take ownership of their personal and professional development in the changing organisations.
Re-assessment format is decided by the school.

Part I students
Classes
- One 1-hour-30-minute seminar each week for 2 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 60% Coursework 1: Individual coursework (1500 words)
- 30% Presentation 1: Group Poster Presentation (15 mins presentation including Q&As and Digital Poster to be submitted)
- 10% Coursework 2: Individual Reflection Diary (500 words)

Educational Aims
This module aims to help students understand and analyse the new developments in work and workplace as well as real world challenges in changing organisations. It further helps students to identify, understand, develop, articulate and utilise their gained human capital (e.g., knowledge of the world of work and professional competences) to manage careers in organisationsLearning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
- Leadership, management and development of people and organisations including the implications of the legal context.
- The need for individuals and organisations to manage responsibly and sustainably and behave ethically in relation to social, cultural, economic and environmental issues.
- The design, development of organisations, including cross-cultural issues, change, diversity and values.

- Global perspectives, models and theories of people and organisational development, organisational career development development, managing change and its influence on people development

This module develops:
- The ability to analyse facts and circumstances to determine the cause of a problem and identifying and selecting appropriate solutions.
- Conceptual and critical thinking, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

- Recognition of cross-cultural issues in own practice, Self and career awareness
Professional practical skills:
This module develops:
- Self-analysis and awareness/sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and cultures. This includes a continuing appetite for development.
- People management, to include communications, team building, leadership and motivating others.

- The ability to apply one’s learning and own experience to career practices; the ability to take initiatives and manage the self.

This module develops:
- Communication and listening including the ability to produce clear, structured business communications in a variety of media.
