Summary
This module explores theories and practices of organisational life, from a critical perspective. It will expose students to issues and problems that affect individual and organisational behaviour.
Re-assessment format is decided by the school.
Target Students
Part I (Year 3) students.There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.Available to JYA/Erasmus students.
Classes
- One 1-hour-30-minute seminar each week for 2 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 80% Coursework 1: One individual 2,000-word essay (80%);
- 20% Participation: Active Class Participation (20%)

Educational Aims
The principle aims of this module are to facilitate an understanding of the nature of managerial and organisational behaviour by developing students' awareness and skills relating to the contemporary organisational life.The module will consider adopting different media such as movies, novels and newspapers to enable students to develop a critical comprehension of silent and emerging issues within organisations, including:The relationship between organisation and control.The practical, political and moral nature of organisational life.A critical perspective of contemporary managerial practices: for example, corruption, bribery, and the dark side of leadership.The relationship between organisation, control and resistance.A social and cultural perspective of organisational risk.Alternative forms of organisations, such as mafia, virtual organisations and leaderless (self-)organisations.Learning Outcomes
