Summary

This module explores theories and practices of organisational life, from a critical perspective. It will expose students to issues and problems that affect individual and organisational behaviour.

Re-assessment format is decided by the school.

Educational Aims

The principle aims of this module are to facilitate an understanding of the nature of managerial and organisational behaviour by developing students' awareness and skills relating to the contemporary organisational life.The module will consider adopting different media such as movies, novels and newspapers to enable students to develop a critical comprehension of silent and emerging issues within organisations, including:The relationship between organisation and control.The practical, political and moral nature of organisational life.A critical perspective of contemporary managerial practices: for example, corruption, bribery, and the dark side of leadership.The relationship between organisation, control and resistance.A social and cultural perspective of organisational risk.Alternative forms of organisations, such as mafia, virtual organisations and leaderless (self-)organisations.

The dynamic and changing nature of business and the consideration of the future of organisations within the global business environment, including the management of risk

Leadership, management and development of people including the implications of the legal context

The development of appropriate policies and strategies within a changing environment to meet stakeholder interests

The need for individuals and organisations to manage responsibly and sustainably and behave ethically in relation to social, cultural, economic and environmental issues

The design, development of organisations, including cross-cultural issues, change, diversity and values

The ability to analyse facts and circumstances to determine the cause of a problem and identifying and selecting appropriate solutions

Conceptual and critical thinking, analysis, synthesis and evaluation

Self-analysis and awareness/sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and cultures. This includes a continuing appetite for development

People management, to include communications, team building, leadership and motivating others

Communication and listening including the ability to produce clear, structured business communications in a variety of media

An awareness of the interpersonal skills of effective listening, negotiating, persuasion and presentation and their use in generating business contacts
