Summary

The module will foster students' understanding of the process by which business organisations make effective use of labour; and the policies they employ to this effect. Topics covered include: employees' incentives in organisations, the hiring process, training and labour turnover, employee pay and performance, trade unions and employment relations.

Target Students

All undergraduate students who are taking or have taken BUSI1095 Introduction to Economics OR BUSI1100 Business Economics OR BUSI1097 Economic Principles OR BUSI1099Microeconomics for Business. Not available to students within the School of Economics.

Educational Aims

The module is aimed at introducing students to the inner workings of firms as this relates to the processes of recruitment, retention and appraisal of labour within organisations; as well as how some of these processes may be influenced by broader labour market issues nationally and internationally. It is hoped that the module will help foster students' understanding of the policies that firms deploy to make effective use of labour.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding
This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
•   The dynamic and changing nature of business and the consideration of the future of organisations within the global business environment, including the management of risk
•   The development, access and operation of markets for resources, goods and services
•   Leadership, management and development of people including the implications of the legal context
•   The management of resources
•   The development of appropriate policies and strategies within a changing environment to meet stakeholder interests
•   The need for individuals and organisations to manage responsibly and sustainably and behave ethically in relation to social, cultural, economic and environmental issues

 
 

Intellectual skills
This module develops:
•    The ability to analyse facts and circumstances to determine the cause of a problem and identifying and selecting appropriate solutions
•    Conceptual and critical thinking, analysis, synthesis and evaluation

Professional practical skills
This module develops:
•    Numeracy and quantitative skills to manipulate data, evaluate, estimate and model business problems, functions and phenomena
•    People management, to include communications, team building, leadership and motivating others

This module develops:
•    Ability to work collaboratively both internally and with external customers and an awareness of mutual interdependence
