Summary
This module provides an overview of the nature of law in society and the structure and operation of the English Legal System. It provides insights into the origins and development of law, the functions and procedures of legal institutions so that students can understand how the legal process works in relation to the various areas of substantive law affecting businesses.
Target Students
Students enrolled in the Foundation in Business and Management and Foundation in Arts and Education
Classes
- One 1-hour tutorial each week for 5 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 20% In Class Exam: 1 x 60 minutes in class exam (written)(20%)
- 10% Participation: Tutorials/Participation (10%)
- 70% Final Exam (1-hour-30-minute): 1 x 90 minutes exam (70%)

Educational Aims
This module aims to:•provide an introduction to the basic legal concepts and rules and the machinery in their introduction, application and enforcement as a foundation for further study in the subject.•encourage the critical assessment of the value of legal rules, processes and institutions.Learning Outcomes
