Summary

This module will be delivered in the form of lectures paired with practical tutorials and demonstrations. In addition, the module provides material for the development of research and data analysis skills. The course will consist of a combination of live lectures, self-study, lab based experiments and demonstrations. The lecture titles are “material mechanical and texture analysis”, "foundations of colloidal science", "particle charge analysis", "microscopy, "particle size analysis", "UV-Vis and FTIR Spectroscopy", "thermal analysis", "interfacial analysis", "rheology", "NMR", "X-ray diffraction", "analytical ultracentrifugation", "size-exclusion chromatography", "flavour analysis & gas/liquid chromatography", "metabolomic analysis & mass spectrometry". The titles of the research skill materials are "scientific writing", "literature searches", "applying for research funding", "principles of data analysis and interpretation", "data presentation and formatting of the research paper/report", "statistical analysis".

Educational Aims

To familiarise and gain an understanding of laboratory based physical and physicochemical characterisation techniques employed in research, new product development, innovation and quality control relevant to the food, biopharma, biomaterial and biotechnology industries. The focus is on developing an in-depth understanding of the analytical principle, applications, practical implementation, instrumentation and data analysis.
