Summary
This module considers:
• Feed industry business, organisation, legislation and business management
• The raw ingredient market
• Feed evaluation systems
• Veterinary clinical nutrition
• Case studies
• Involving visits to commercial premises (feed manufacturers, zoo/companion animal facilities and farm animal production units) and other topics as deemed appropriate to the module content.
Target Students
Students registered for MSc/PGDipin Animal Nutrition.
Classes
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 11 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 6 weeks
- One 4-hour field studies each week for 7 weeks
Assessment
- 15% Coursework 1: Case study - Feed manufacturing
- 15% Coursework 4: Case Study - System analysis + diet formulation - Zoo/Companion
- 15% Coursework 2: Case study - System analysis + diet formulation - Dairy
- 15% Coursework 3: Case Study - System analysis + diet formulation - Pigs
- 40% Exam 1 (24-hour): Open book online assessment

Educational Aims
To develop an in depth understanding of the nature, structure and organisation of the industries that provide feedstuffs for farm, companion and zoo animals. Also to demonstrate, by examination, a detailed knowledge of raw ingredient markets, industry regulatory structures and associated legislation, feed evaluation systems and veterinary clinical nutrition. Also, to demonstrate through a series of case studies, a detailed understanding of feed manufacturing, and diet evaluation and formulation for various classes of farmed livestock, companion and zoo animals.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Explain the feed industry structure, organisation and management as it relates to farm, companion and zoo animals.
- Describe current commercial practices of feed manufacturing, feed evaluation and diet formulation for zoo and companion animals and livestock.
- Communicate effectively (through a series of investigative reports) to a standard consistent with the expectations of industry.
- Perform dietary audits, evaluations and formulations using industry-standard software.
