Summary

This module will introduce the concept of metabolic control at the gene expression level with particular reference to the role of nutrients in these processes. Through the provision and application of relevant biochemical and molecular biology information, students will gain an understanding of the regulatory effects of nutrients, either directly or indirectly, on gene expression and how this influences metabolism and growth in eukaryotic systems.

Target Students

Students studying on the PGDip/MSc Nutritional Sciences, PGDip/MSc Animal Nutrition and PGDip/MSc Biotechnology programmes.Module is co-taught with MSc Animal Nutrition and Biotechnology taking Molecular Nutrition (Animal Nutrition Option) (BIOS4088) or Molecular Nutrition (Biotechnology Option) (BIOS4120) respectively.

Classes

Lectures - 2 x 2 hours (2 hours morning and 2 hours afternoon) per week throughout Spring semesters (8 weeks); Practicals - 3 x 4 hour computer-based sessions; Laboratory practical class – 2x 4hours laboratory –based practical class. Module is co-taught with D24AN8 and D24BA6 their timetables need to be coordinated and to ensure selective timetable slots are available where co-teaching place. Timetabling should not clash with D23BN3 Molecular Nutrition (BSc version).

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

This module aims to enhance students' knowledge and understanding of the regulatory effects of nutrients, either directly or indirectly, on gene expression and how this influences metabolism and growth in eukaryotic systems. To demonstrate through coursework and/or examination an understanding of the factors involved in regulation of signalling processes and gene expression and the potential for manipulating metabolic processes through nutrient supply.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1) Explain the structure of the genome and mechanisms by which genes are expressed and translated into proteins

2) Explain the molecular mechanisms by which nutrients regulate gene expression.

3) Illustrate how experimental methodologies can be used to assess how nutrients influence gene expression.

4) Analyse molecular biology and biochemical experimental data generated from experiments examining the effects of a nutrient on gene expression.
