Summary
The module will provide an in-depth induction into the relationship of bacterial and viral pathogens and their hosts. Including understanding the underlying molecular basis of the adaptive response of bacteria to various environments and the mechanisms by which bacteria and viruses subvert cellular machinery. The practical exercise will provide some experience of designing experimental strategies.
Target Students
Only available to UG Microbiology students OR UG Biotechnology students OR School of Life Science students.Optional for students taking Honours degree in Microbiology and Biotechnology. Available to School of Life Science students where suitable pre-requisites exist. There are a limited number of places on this module.
Classes
- One 4-hour un assigned each week for 2 weeks
- One 4-hour practicum
- One 4-hour lecture each week for 8 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Lab based practical report, length 2 x A4 (1000 words)
- Coursework 2: Formative - assessed by group presentation
- Coursework 3: Formative - assessed by group presentation
- 70% Exam 1 (2-hour)
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The module aims to describe the underlying molecular basis of the adaptive response of bacteria to various environments and to describe the mechanisms by which bacteria and viruses invade eukaryotic cells. In addition, students are given experience of literature analysis, preparing material for a problem-based learning exercise, to investigate host-pathogen interaction. The practical exercise will provide some experience of designing experimental strategies.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Understand mechanisms by which bacteria and viruses invade eukaryotic cells, and how they use cellular machinery to their own advantage
- Design and carry out appropriate experiments to test a hypothesis (as a productive member of a team)
- Collect, record, analyse and present data, making accurate observations and measurements
- Communicate accurately, clearly and concisely in verbal and visual forms, making appropriate acknowledgement of the work of others
- Listen to and evaluate the views of others and contribute to group discussion
