Summary
This module covers molecular and applied aspects of plant pathology including plant-pathogen interactions, disease epidemiology, pathogen detection, disease control, pathogen biology and plant mechanisms of defence. The relative strengths and weaknesses of different disease control options including application of fungicides, biological control, deployment of disease resistant varieties and biotechnological approaches will be considered.
Target Students
Students in the Schools of Biosciences and Life Sciences.
Classes
- One 3-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
- One 3-hour field studies
Lectures (30h), 1 field walk (3h), self-directed study (67h).
Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): Online examination with 24-hour window.
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
This module will explore mechanisms of plant-pathogen interactions resulting in susceptibility or resistance and will examine the options to control losses due to plant diseases.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding of:
- Strategies used by plant pathogens to spread between plants and cause disease epidemics.
- Mechanisms by which pathogens cause disease and plants defend themselves.
- The approaches used in plant disease control.
