Summary
The module will introduce students to the wide range of techniques currently used in experimental biology. These will include the key skills of molecular biology for the analysis of gene structure and gene expression. More specialised techniques to be covered include bioinformatics, transgenic plants and metabolite analysis. This module is based on practicals and demonstrations and is a pre-requisite for all students considering a final year project in molecular plant sciences.

Educational Aims
The module aims to provide students with practical experience in a wide range of molecular methods used in experimental biology. This is a practical-based module providing some background but the primary aim is to allow students to develop skills that will be useful in their final year project. Some more advanced techniques will be demonstrated and the underlying principles discussed. This module is a prerequisite for all students considering a final year project in molecular plant sciences.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate the knowledge of a wide range of molecular techniques.
2. Recognise the importance of experimental design and having appropriate controls.
3. Collect, analyse and record data by making accurate observations and measurements.
4. Work safely in the laboratory and respond appropriately to relevant safety issues.
