Summary

Dietary feed intake, energy, protein, water, macro and micro-nutrient requirements. Application of feed analysis and databases. Nutritional energetics and protein metabolism. Energy, protein and amino acid nutrition. Regulation of appetite and energy expenditure. Future nutrition based challenges.

Target Students

All students with an interest in animal nutrition

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

To explain and illustrate the knowledge required to understand animal nutrition with 1) specific reference to diet formulation and the application of feed analysis and data bases, including feed intake, energy, protein, water and mineral requirements. 2) To consider feed intake, energy, protein, water and mineral requirements of animals in different physiological/pathological states. 3) To consider energy, protein and amino acid requirements of animals. 4) To understand the factors involved in regulating feed intake, appetite, energy expenditure and protein accretion. 5) To understand the future nutritional challenges of feeding the world.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

●   Describe principles underlying animal nutrition, feed intake, energy and protein types and metabolism, and relate this knowledge to feed intake, energy, protein, water and mineral requirements of animals

●   Explain the regulation of energy balance and appetite

●   Evaluate the influence of dietary protein quality for ruminant and non-ruminant species

●   Discuss the principles of feed intake regulation, feeding practice, diet formulation and application of measurements of feed intake and nutrient composition and application of feed databases.
