Summary

This course provides a historical and contemporary perspective on how biotechnology has made an impact on many aspects of our daily lives such as healthcare, food production and manufacturing, and environment. This course will examine current global challenges facing the world human population, and potential biotechnological solutions to these problems. This course provides students with fundamental scientific concepts of biotechnology through its balanced coverage of molecular biology, contemporary techniques and applications in emerging areas of biotechnology, integration of ethical issues, and career guidance.

Educational Aims

This course introduce students to the core concepts of biotechnology, and the cutting-edge techniquesand applications of biotechnology for the benefits of humankind and environment. It also aims toencourage the development of core transferrable skills in practical and student-led sessions. The practicalcoursework aimed to encourage reflective and self-motivated learning, through the acquisition of information, and construction of a balanced reasoned argument towards answering a question. Thestudent-led sessions will encourage active participation and self-directed learning.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Comprehend the terminology and nomenclature used in biotechnology to appreciate and express their knowledge of the subject area.
  2. Explain the diverse range of essential information, major concepts, principles and theories associated with specialist disciplines within biotechnology.
  3. Collect and integrate several lines of evidence and apply them in a balanced manner to support an argument.
  4. Apply subject knowledge and understanding to address problems, and effectively communicate these in written and verbal forms
