Summary
This module introduces students to the disciplined study of language and literature. It covers several key areas and theoretical concepts in the broad field of linguistics and literature, such as: linguistic rank scale, grammar, communication, literary criticism, British and Malaysian literature. Strong emphasis is placed on developing the students’ understanding and appreciation of how the principles and concepts taught can be used to examine a range of texts

- One 1-hour seminar each week for 5 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 20% In-class Exam 1: 1 x 40 minutes quiz (20%)
- 10% In-class Exam 2: 1 x 30 minutes quiz (10%)
- 20% In-class Exam 3: 1 x 40 minutes quiz (20%)
- 10% Proposal: 200 words proposal (10%)
- 40% Essay: 1200 words essay (40%)

Educational Aims
This module aims to introduce key areas and concepts of linguistics and literature, and develop students’ ability to analyse real-world texts using the concepts learnt.Learning Outcomes
