Summary

The module aims to provide an introduction to Space Missions elements such that the students will have a preliminary idea of what knowledge is required to design a space system. The main topics covered are:
- A brief history of Space Conquest,
- The Space Environment and its effects
- Space Missions Elements and Design Phases
- Orbital Mechanics and Orbital Transfer Overview
- Spacecraft Elements ( Structure, EPS, OBDH, AODCS, TT&C, Thermal)
- Space Debris and Trajectory Optimization
As part of the module students will use a range of software to design and analyse the performance of a space mission. The outcome of the study will be presented and assessed via a report and an exam.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by exam. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.

Target Students

Students must be on one of the Aerospace Engineering courses or other M3 engineering courses that meet the pre-requisites. Not available to any other students including exchange students.Pre-requisites: Maths and MATLAB such as taught in MMME1050, EEEE1006, and MMME2032 or equivalent.

Classes

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to most of the main elements of a space mission such the students have the essential knowledge of what is needed to design a space mission and can perform appropriate basic calculations.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
• L01 - Identify and evaluate the Space environment effects in a space system. (AHEP 2)
• L02 - Evaluate and identify the Technology Readiness Level of a space technology. (AHEP 2)
• L03 - Demonstrate understanding and perform calculations relating to basic orbital mechanics. (AHEP 1)
• L04 - Demonstrate understanding and perform calculations relating to basic satellite elements (power budget, link budget, mass budget, etc.) (AHEP 1)
• LO5 - Demonstrate ability to communicate familiarity with and understanding of the lectured materials. (AHEP 17)
• LO6 - Communicate the outcome of an aerospace project in an appropriate and professional written report. (AHEP 17)
