Summary
This is a research-based module with emphasis on modelling, design and analysis. Students will be equipped with knowledge and skills for assessing the interactions between a building, its occupants and local microclimate conditions. Through optimisation and other procedures, integrated design solutions are explored that seek to reduce energy use in building heating, cooling and lighting whilst achieving acceptable environmental performance. Students will work in groups to develop a building design from which individual projects are identified that will assess baseline energy performance and investigate appropriate energy efficient and sustainable strategies to improve efficiency.
Target Students
Students following MSc programmes within Architecture and Built Environment
Classes
- One 7-hour practicum each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Project 1: 4000 word illustrated individual report.
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
This module develops research skills through a collaborative design project that explores the integration of sustainability concepts and strategies. This provides opportunities to apply different approaches to assessing performance and developing a holistic understanding of a building and its systems.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
How environmental design targets are set and knowledge of the process for attaining these through the design of a building employing effective passive environmental systems and how these are set within regulatory and economic contexts
Professional/practical skills
Ability to use simulation tools to inform reasoned design changes that address both energy demand and occupant comfort
Transferable/key skills
Written, graphic and verbal communication
The ability to apply research skills to informing design and evaluation of buildings
Intellectual skills
The ability to rationalise complex systems into a form that may be analysed, to critically evaluate results obtained and from these form reasoned judgements about the qualities of a building design
Team working and time management
