Summary

This lecture-based module - supported by weekly workshops - aims to develop practical knowledge, understanding and ability of the environmental, construction, structural and technological dimensions of architectural design. The module is designed to support practical applications in the studio, reinforcing skills in the integrative nature of architectural design. The assessment for this module is partially based on the evaluation of a digital or physical mock-up and on a final technical report (2.000 words).

Target Students

MArch Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 2) K10I and K10X; U7PATTAR and U7PATTAR3.

Assessment

• 15% Coursework 1: Outline proposal.
• 50% Coursework 2: Developed design.
• 15% Coursework 3: Technical design.
• 20% Coursework 4: Mock-up.

Educational Aims

Learning Outcomes

Students will be expected to:
1.    demonstrate a critical appraisal of structural, constructional, and material system and environmental technologies, relevant to the architectural design for the comprehensive design project within the context of regulatory frameworks and environmental sustainability

2.    demonstrate an understanding of sustainable design, and the relationship between local and global climate, built form, needs and aspirations of building users, and energy consumption

3.    show ability to devise construction strategies, including those for structural, constructional, and material systems that may be integrated to a complex building (within the studio project), through the study of structural theories, construction techniques and building processes, including smoke and fire safety

4.    demonstrate an understanding of the physical properties and characteristics of building materials, components and systems, and the environmental and safety impact of specification choices

5.    demonstrate a knowledge of the principles associated with visual, thermal and acoustic environments through the integration of environmental comfort and strategies for building services

6.    demonstrate an ability to devise appropriate presentation and communication skills

7.    demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and application of sustainable design principles.

This module supports the following ARB Criteria at Part 2, through assessment (A) - supporting a student to have:
GC1.2 ability to understand the constructional and structural systems, the environmental strategies and the regulatory requirements that apply to the design and construction of a comprehensive design project.
GC5.2 understanding of the impact of buildings on the environment, and the precepts of sustainable design.
GC8.1 understanding of the investigation, critical appraisal and selection of alternative structural, constructional and material systems relevant to architectural design.
GC8.2 understanding of strategies for building construction, and ability to integrate knowledge of structural principles and construction techniques.
GC8.3 understanding of the physical properties and characteristics of building materials, components and systems, and the environmental impact of specification choices.
GC9.3 knowledge of strategies for building services, and ability to integrate these in a design project.
GA2.2 ability to evaluate and apply a comprehensive range of visual, oral and written media to test, analyse, critically appraise and explain design proposals.
