Summary
This course explores contemporary architecture in relation to major social, economic, political, ecological, and technological transformations after the Second World War. A wide range of topics including consumerism, globalization, mass media, cultural identities, aesthetic explorations in other forms of contemporary art, and changing economic structures are discussed in terms of their role in shaping architectural theory, practice, and built environment at large. Lectures employ building case studies, film excerpts, and assigned readings to analyze key concepts in great detail.

Educational Aims
The aims of the module are the following:To enrich the student’s awareness of the theories and ideas that inform contemporary practice and debate.To enhance student’s critical writing and research skills.To develop a reflective and critical approach to architecture which can be applied in their own design projects.To meet in part the ARB/RIBA Graduate Criteria (GC) and Attributes (GA) for Part 1Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will demonstrate:
Knowledge of the cultural, social, and intellectual histories, theories, and technologies that influence the design of buildings and cities at large [GC2.1, GC2.2, GC2.3].
Knowledge of the interaction between architecture and other forms of contemporary art [GC3.1, GC3.2, GC3.3].
An informed understanding of the nature of architectural practice in contemporary society [GC6.1].
The ability to evaluate evidence, arguments and assumptions in order to make and present sound judgments within a structured discourse relating to architectural culture, theory and design [GA1.4].
