Summary
A series of seminars introduce students to academic integrity and academic forms of writing. Students have the opportunity to research into interests they have developed on the course and undertake one independent investigative study under supervision or develop work under direction as offered by the teaching staff.
This module involves the preparation of a dissertation of 15,000 words (with illustrations), in a subject related to the Built Environment.
Target Students
Architectural Studies Year 3 students only
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 13 weeks
In addition to dissertation mechanics, there will be a 1 day long Symposium (7.5 hours approximately) each semester. Approximately 8 hours of supervision entitlement is granted with further time at the discretion of the supervisor.
Assessment
- 80% Coursework 1: Dissertation of 15,000 words
- 10% Coursework 2: Dissertation mechanics
- 10% Presentation 1: Symposium presentation & critique
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
Students develop knowledge in detail of a chosen or elected subject field through extensive bibliographic survey, comparative studies and critical reflection. This then enables them to present a written argument and a personal insight on the relevant issues pertaining to the subject of inquiry.Learning Outcomes
