Summary

A series of seminars introduce students to academic integrity and academic forms of writing. Students have the opportunity to research into interests they have developed on the course and undertake one independent investigative study under supervision or develop work under direction as offered by the teaching staff.


This module involves the preparation of a dissertation of 15,000 words (with illustrations), in a subject related to the Built Environment.

Target Students

Architectural Studies Year 3 students only

Classes

In addition to dissertation mechanics, there will be a 1 day long Symposium (7.5 hours approximately) each semester. Approximately 8 hours of supervision entitlement is granted with further time at the discretion of the supervisor.

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

Students develop knowledge in detail of a chosen or elected subject field through extensive bibliographic survey, comparative studies and critical reflection. This then enables them to present a written argument and a personal insight on the relevant issues pertaining to the subject of inquiry.

Knowledge and Understanding

On successful completion of the module, the students should:
A1 develop detailed knowledge base in the chosen investigation

A3 engage in relevant interpretation and critique of related issues
A4 develop knowledge on academic forms of writing

The students should be able to:
B1 conduct comprehensive survey and engage with bibliographic resources on various themes with width and currency, using pirmary and secondary sources
B2 analyse, compare and reflect critically on related issues
B3 identify, locate and situate architectural issues in their cultural contexts
B4 make salient observations on elected or directed topic
B5 develop critically in observation of structure and formats of published and unpublished research

Professional/practical skills

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
C1 engage in critical discourse on elected or directed areas of investigation
C2 prepare a coherent argument, and offer insights in a written document of 15,000 words in the subject matter

Transferable/key skills

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
D1 extend intellectual engagement on various issues related to a chosen field of inquiry
D2 employ knowledge of research techniques
D3 organise and prepare longer piece of research work
