Summary
This module is founded on the principle that architecture is an 'integrated design' practice in which the exploratory endeavours of creative material practice are integrated with the technical aspects of material matters in context, considering culture, technology, environment, climate, climate change, landscape and bio-diversity
This module builds on students' previous studies in the field of materials and technology, structures and environmental design, and forms the multi-disciplinary field of study and activity such that an architect must negotiate, lead, and develop when devising a material project in and for a given context. Multi-, Inter- and Trans- disciplinary practices of material, spatial and technical design are presented, analysed and reflected upon in the lecture and seminar programme.
Target Students
Only available for students studying BArch Architecture
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: Coursework
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
This module seeks to develop the knowledge, understanding and skill necessary for integrated architectural design. The module introduces, practises, and assesses multi- inter- and trans- disciplinary models and methods of and for spatial design, carefully situating this integrated model of the disciplines in architectural practice. Students are required to develop a report documenting reflective practice and the production of an integrated research based piece of structured, material, design thinking, the intention is that knowledge and skills gained will inform the Design Studio project's sophistication and rigour through the development of progressive, professional competencies and research.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate the following:
1.0 An ability to create architectural designs that satisfy both aesthetic and technical requirements. (GC1.1, GC1.2, GC1.3)
2.0 An understanding of the structural design, constructional and engineering problems associated with building design. (GC8.1, GC8.2. GC8.3)
3.0 An adequate knowledge of the histories and theories of architecture and the related arts, technologies and human sciences. (GC2.1, GC2.2, GC2.3)
4.0 An understanding of the need to critically review precedents relevant to the function, organisation and technological strategy of design proposals. (GC7.1)
5.0 Principles associated with designing optimum visual, thermal and acoustic environments. (GC 9.1)
In their professional career, graduates of the module will demonstrate the ability to design in an integrated way. As future professionals, students should be able to:-
6.0 Critically appraise and develop design proposals through the co-ordination of applied technical inputs, technologies and environmental design concepts in spatial design practices (GC1, GC8)
7.0 Determine the appropriateness of architectural and technical solutions towards achieving fully functional, inhabitable, durable and engaging architecture (GC1, GC8).
