Summary

This module focuses on develop students architectural design ability. Structured projects move to multi-spatial public buildings of modest scale set within an urban context. This module introduces a more comprehensive understanding of architectural design and requires the students to take a certain level of responsibility for their design decisions. The emphasis is for students to improve spatial, aesthetic, sensual as well as practical, structural and dimensional qualities of their design practicing to translate an abstract idea into a form with a positive physical presence.

The Studio set up in a vertical structure of 3 units. The units emphasis its own design topic addressing the diversity of architectural approaches to the ARB/RIBA criteria. The main project requires students to design a medium sized, public mixed-use building responding to given requirements with a certain choice of site. The project runs in parallel with final year students. Due to the vertical studio structure, Year 2 students have the opportunity to observe and develop this project alongside the more advanced Year 3 design students.

Classes

Activities may take place every teaching week of the Semester or only in specified weeks. It is usually specified above if an activity only takes place in some weeks of a Semester.Periodic field studies and project reviews, criticisms on completion of each coursework project. Students are expected to undertake significant private study in addition to participating in original activities

Assessment

Educational Aims

This studio-based module aims to further develop the student’s ability to successfully design a multi-spatial building of modest scale. The student will demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between site, brief, cultural context, the environment, spatial qualities and aesthetics and technical elements and practice to respond in a more comprehensive manner through the project design. This module aims to practice and achieve the General Attributes of the ARB/RIBA “Prescription of Qualifications at Part 1”.1. Students will have the ability to generate design proposals using understanding of a body of knowledge, some at the current boundaries of professional practice and the academic discipline of architecture. (GA1.1)2. Students will have the ability to apply a range of communication methods and media to present design proposals clearly and effectively. (GA1.2)3. Students will have the understanding of the alternative materials, processes and techniques that apply to architectural design and building construction. (GA1.3)4. Students will have the ability to evaluate evidence, arguments and assumptions in order to make and present sound judgments within a structured discourse relating to architectural culture, theory and design. (GA1.4)5. And also to fulfill in part the Architects' Registration Board (ARB) “Prescription of qualifications: ARB Criteria at Parts 1, for students participating in the Architecture programme. (GA1.5)
