Summary
This module introduces construction methodologies related to medium- and large- scale buildings and outlines the first principles of modern methods of construction, including systems and components, prefabrication, and performance envelopes.
Target Students
Only available for students studying BArch Architecture (K100) or MEng (Hons) Architecture and Environmental Design (K230)
Assessment
- 20% Coursework 1: Fire Standards group work
- 80% Coursework 2: Individual Architecture In Detail panel submission
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The module builds upon work covered in Tectonics 2A, and the construction methods of traditional systems of building. The taught content facilitates the development of practical knowledge and understanding of the material and technical dimensions of building design, and current trends in the construction industry, whilst the coursework facilitates skill development in the application of this knowledge to design studio projects.Learning Outcomes
The students on successful completion of this module will be expected to:
- Have an understanding of the impact of buildings on the environment, and the precepts of sustainable design (GC5.2);
- Have an understanding of the nature of professionalism and the duties and responsibilities of architects to clients, building users, constructors, co-professionals and the wider society (GC6.1).
- Have an understanding of the role of the architect within the design team and construction industry, recognising the importance of current methods and trends in the construction of the built environment (GC6.2)
- Demonstrate an understanding of the strategies for building construction, and ability to integrate knowledge of structural principles and construction techniques (GC8.2)
- Demonstrate an understanding of the physical properties and characteristics of building materials, components and systems, material processing and fabrication, and the environmental impact of their specification choices (GC8.3)
- Demonstrate developing knowledge of the principles associated with designing optimum visual, thermal and acoustic environments (GC9.1)
- Demonstrate developing knowledge of the professional inter-relationships of individuals and organisations involved in procuring and delivering architectural projects, and how these are defined through contractual and organisational structures (GC11.2).
