Summary

This module explores three core areas in the context of a construction project:
1. The requirement for information management
2. Geometrical modelling
3. Performance evaluation

The module introduces students to aspects of the UK BIM Framework and considers basic requirements of information management.  It also introduces students to geometrical modelling software developing parametric modelling capability and energy analysis software.  Students will develop their professional presentation and critical evaluation skills enhancing their ability to effectively communicate through design and writing.

Target Students

BArch Architecture (K100) and MEng Architecture and Environmental Design (K230) students, U6UATTRE and U7UATTED.

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

1. To develop a student's skills in written and visual communication2. To enhance a student's ability to critically evaluate and make informed decisions about the value of different ideas3. To reinforce an integrated approach to architectural design that encompasses technical, social and aesthetic concerns4. To support criteria stipulated by professional bodies for students participating in the BArch Architecture (K100) and MEng Architecture and Environmental Design (K230) course.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be developing skills to enable:

- the ability to create architectural designs that satisfy both aesthetic and technical requirements (ARB GC1)

- an understanding of the relationship between people and buildings and their environment and the need to relate buildings and spaces between them to human wants and needs (ARB GC5)

- an understanding of the nature of professionalism and the duties and responsibilities of architects to clients, building users, contractors, co-professionals and the wider society (GC6.1)

- an understanding of the role of the architect within the design team and construction industry, recognising the importance of current methods and trends in the construction of the built environment (ARB GC6.2)

- an understanding of the structural design, constructional and engineering problems associated with building design (ARB GC8)

- an appreciation of the principles associated with designing optimum visual and thermal environments (ARB GC9.1)

- understanding of the principle of sharing building performance data to raise industry awareness and encourage the growth of a zero carbon culture (SA5).
