Summary
Integrated design in architecture in Year 1 introduces the principle of a holistic and integrated approach to building design. This is predominantly taught through a year-long lecture series that brings together the disciplines of humanities, tectonics, and environmental design.
In the first semester, lectures introduce the notion of thinking architecture, the fundamental principles of design and drawing skills, and building typologies as key areas of study.
The second semester focuses on methodologies and approaches relevant to the studio comprehensive design project, with a more intense investigation of topics such as Site analysis in Urban context, Client Analysis, Constructing narrative in Design, Typology and precedents, and Design development process and Design project presentation (Booklet).
The shelter project is focused on the development of the manual skills and understanding of the basic principles of the construction by building a simple cardboard construction.
Positioned between other taught lecture modules and the studio work, the IDA module is designed to make more tangible other taught material, offering additional and relevant support to design studio project work.
This is practiced and assessed through a series of workshops, critical and reflective analysis, and practical assignments, culminating in the ability to critically reflect on the individual design process taken during the comprehensive design project.

Educational Aims
Through a multidisciplinary lecture series and drawing on internal expertise and external practitioners, this module initiates a context supportive of an integrated approach to design, introducing the fundamental principles of design and the history of typologies as well as methodology, technology and approaches to design and is closely linked to the studio programme and the field study trip. This module is further facilitated through a series of workshops, enabling expansion of the creative design process with themes of composition, structures, tectonics and site response.Implanting the notion of reflecting on the design process and self-led research, this module lays down a foundation for subsequent years, promoting skills of critical written analysis and appropriate graphic documentation and encourages an individual approach to representing these findings. The module aims to fulfil in part the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) “Prescription of Qualifications: RIBA Criteria at Parts 1, specifically the General Criteria (GC) at Part 1, for students participating in the Architecture programme.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will demonstrate:
• The ability to analyse building typologies and to understand the history and evolution of building styles (GC2.1, GC2.2).
• Skills in sketching and in the creative conceptualisation and representation of ideas (GC5.2, GC3.2, GC 3.3).
• The ability to design and build a structure in the landscape which evidences consideration of the user, the site and the given material (GC8.2, GC8.3).
• An ability to critically reflect on the design process and the relationship between site and building. (GC2.2, GC5.1, GC5.3).
• An understanding of building materials and environmental issues associated with building design (GC8.2, GC8.3).
• A reflective understanding of theoretical concepts applied to the design process of Studio Design projects (GC2.3).
• Skills in architectural writing and research, specifically academic writing and the ability to formulate judgment and a structured discourse that integrates design, theory and architecture (GC1.3).
